On Monday 7 June, members of Helsinki Policy Forum Women Parliamentarians Network met to hear from an Iraqi MP on the struggles faced in passing legislation against domestic violence in Iraq. The meeting was attended by parliamentarians, government officials and experts from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, the UK and the United States.

Participants shared their experiences of passing similar legislation in their respective countries, including ways that they had overcome opposition within their parliaments and had gained popular support. Various solutions, such as focusing on the economic impact of domestic violence and using the upcoming elections as a platform for discussing the legislation were put forward.
