Julian Weinberg, Political Dialogues Director, has just written an article for Middle East Eye, highlighting the importance of Tunisia’s local elections for young activists.

While turnout in local elections was perhaps disappointing, they provided a mechanism for a new generation of Tunisian activists to enter politics. Indeed, independent candidates – many of whom are young activists previously active in civil society –  gained a larger proportion of seats  (32%) than any of the country’s established parties.

Elections therefore mark an important moment in the country’s democratic transition. However, newly elected local councillors will require support if their full potential is to be realised.
