Discussing the health challenges in Gaza with British surgeons working on the ground, 6 June 2025
On 6 June 2025, we convened an online discussion regarding the humanitarian and health situation in Gaza, based on first-hand testimony from medical professionals, Dr Graeme Groom and Dr Victoria Rose, who have recently returned from working on the ground in the Strip with the charity, IDEALS, in May 2025.
The meeting was attended by senior diplomats and foreign ministry officials, as well as experts and academics from France, Ireland, Jordan, the Order of Malta, Palestine, South Africa, the UK, and the WHO.
The surgeons, who have extensive experience working on the ground to provide medical support throughout the ongoing conflict, provided crucial insights into the current state of Gaza’s healthcare system, the challenges facing international humanitarian operations, and the long-term implications for reconstruction efforts. They emphasised the importance of supporting local medical colleagues and ensuring access for medical supplies to prevent further deterioration of the health situation.
