Forward Thinking Conference on Sustainable Regional Stability, 15 July 2026

On 15 July 2026, we convened a conference focused on the role of Egypt and Jordan in promoting regional stability amid an increasingly turbulent geopolitical landscape. Discussions centered on the war in Gaza, instability in the West Bank, tensions between the United States and Iran, relations with Israel, and the wider challenges facing the Middle East.

Chaired by Jordan Morgan, Director of Programmes at Forward Thinking, the event brought together Senator Mohamed El Orabi, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt; Ambassador Manar Dabbas, Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United Kingdom; Ambassador Ashraf Swelam, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the United Kingdom; Senator Rania Sedky; and Dina Al Bashir, Member of the Jordanian House of Representatives, to explore the perspectives and regional roles of Jordan and Egypt. Additional contributions were made by Oliver McTernan, Director and Co-Founder of Forward Thinking, alongside parliamentarians, diplomats, experts, and journalists.

The discussion highlighted the centrality of the Palestinian issue to both Egypt and Jordan, as well as its wider implications for regional stability. Participants noted the severe humanitarian situation in Gaza and expressed concern regarding developments in the West Bank. A recurring theme throughout the dialogue was the evolving role of regional powers in facilitating diplomacy and peacebuilding amid growing uncertainty in both regional and international politics. Participants also considered the role and influence of the United States in the region, including the future viability of proposed peace initiatives.

Further discussion focused on the United Kingdom's historical engagement in the region and the reasons why developments in Israel and Palestine continue to carry significance beyond the Middle East. Participants noted the importance of a viable Palestinian economy in fostering confidence in a future Palestinian state, alongside the need for greater Palestinian political cohesion.

Several recommendations emerged during the discussion, including calls for stronger and more consistent enforcement of international law.
