Meetings in the House of Commons and the House of Lords with our Egyptian Delegation, 14 July 2026
On 14 July 2026, we convened meetings in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords for an Egyptian delegation led by Senator Mohammed El Orabi, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt; Senator Rania Sedky; Dr Zein El Sadat, Founder of the SHAF Centre for Future Studies and Crisis Analysis; and Abdallah El Sadat, Deputy Executive Director of the SHAF Centre. The meetings focused on the shifting security and political landscape globally.
In the morning, the delegation met with Stuart Anderson MP to discuss the security situation in the MENA–Gulf region and to place it within a changing global political context. Participants considered the effects of great-power competition, the expansion of foreign military involvement and growing tensions around strategic locations such as the Strait of Hormuz. Water security, climate change, the changing nature of modern warfare and the erosion of traditional borders were also identified as significant challenges requiring sustained regional cooperation.
In the afternoon, the delegation met with Baroness Morris of Bolton in the House of Lords to discuss prospects for peace in the region, drawing on historical examples mediation and reconciliation.
The discussions in both the Commons and the Lords shared several common themes: the weakening enforcement of international law and the resulting accountability gap; the recognition that regional disputes cannot be resolved through military means alone; and the importance of continued exchanges between British and Egyptian parliamentarians. Such dialogue remains an important tool for navigating regional challenges, strengthening mutual understanding and developing a more sustainable regional security architecture at a time of significant geopolitical change.
