Seminar on Yemen in the Context of Regional and International Developments, 21 September 2025
On 21 September, we were invited to speak at an event titled "Yemen in Light of Regional and International Developments", organised by the Mokha Center for Strategic Studies in Istanbul. The Mokha Center is a Yemeni research organisation focused on policy, strategy, and analysis of the situation in Yemen.
This event brought together a range of Yemeni political figures, analysts, journalists and international experts to examine the ongoing crisis in Yemen and how it is shaped by, and contributes to, wider regional developments. At a time when international approaches to peace are often top-down and disconnected from local realities, this dialogue provided a valuable opportunity to contribute to more inclusive, sustainable pathways to peace.
The first panel session focused on the origins of the Yemeni conflict and its possible future trajectories, recent geopolitical developments in the region, and potential pathways to peace. Oliver delivered a speech on the process of peace mediation, emphasising that sustainable peace emerges from inclusive dialogue and addressing the root causes of conflict , in contrast to “peace through strength” approaches.
The second session featured contributions from the Forward Thinking team. Oliver evaluated four central theories on the origins of the conflict. Jordan analysed global political shifts and the role of leadership and dialogue in supporting peacebuilding. Cecily discussed the impacts of the water crisis in Yemen on women’s health and highlighted the vital role women can play in addressing this challenge. Anna reflected on the evolution of Western media narratives surrounding the conflict in Yemen.
